⚠️ Danger — Gas Appliance Turn off the gas supply to the range at the shutoff valve and unplug the range (or shut off its circuit breaker) before beginning. After reassembly, check every disturbed gas connection for leaks using a soapy water solution — bubbling indicates a leak. If you ever smell gas at any point during this repair, do not attempt to light the range or operate any switches; leave the area immediately and contact your gas utility or a qualified technician.
⚠️ Fragile — Handle By The Bracket Only Wear work gloves. Remove the oven racks and, if replacing the broil igniter, the broiler pan and floor panel as needed to access the igniter assembly, typically located at the front of the burner tube. Photograph the wiring connections before disconnecting anything. This igniter is extremely fragile — the ceramic body and silicon carbide tip can crack from a light bump or from skin oils weakening the material over time, so handle it only by the metal mounting bracket, never by the ceramic body itself. Disconnect the wire leads at the ceramic wire nut splices (or the terminal connector, depending on your model), then remove the mounting screw and lift the old igniter free. Position the new XGR403 in the same location and orientation relative to the burner tube — proper alignment matters, since the igniter needs to sit close enough to reliably ignite the gas once the valve opens. Secure the mounting bracket, then reconnect the wire leads using the included ceramic wire nuts, twisting them securely and confirming no bare wire is exposed. Restore the gas supply and power, then test the burner and check for leaks at any connection you touched. Watch the igniter glow through a full ignition cycle to confirm the burner lights well within 90 seconds. Frequently Asked Questions
My igniter glows bright orange but the oven never lights. Is this the right part?
Yes, this is the single most common symptom of a failing round igniter. As the igniter ages, its silicon carbide element degrades and can no longer draw enough current to trip open the gas safety valve, even though it still glows. A well-known rule of thumb: if the igniter is glowing for more than about 90 seconds without the burner lighting, it has lost the current draw needed to do its job, and replacement is the correct fix.
Can I use this for both the bake and broil igniter?
On many GE-platform ranges, yes — the same round igniter design serves both the bake and broil burner positions.
